Paisley Star arrives

05-15-2013

Paisley Star finally decides to grace us with her presence! On Tuesday I had an appointment with our midwife to see hoe we were doing, at this point I was 43 weeks and 2 days along and still only dilated to a 3.  She informed me that if I didn't go into spontaneous labor before Saturday they would induce me on Sunday.  Chad and I talked about it and decided that we were done waiting and made the appointment to go in on Wednesday to be induced.  The night before we got things ready; Chad made dinner and threw in a load of laundry, while I painted my nails pink! We watched a movie and ate dinner, enjoying the our last quiet night together for a while.  We got to the hospital on Wednesday morning at 7am and they got me hooked up to some fluids and checked me, i was at a 4 now! So we made some progress overnight, but not nearly enough.  They broke my water and I walked around for the next 2 hours trying to kick start labor.  But no, not happening.  They started me on the pitocin, started it on a really low dose.  At this point I was still trying to do this with no epidural. I labored for 9 hours and finally gave in and got the epidural; it only took blacking out from the pain to convince me.  A wise ex labor and delivery nurse once told you know you are ready for your epidural when you are in mortal fear of your next contraction.  I thought that was funny and didn't fully understand, until that moment.  After the epidural things slowed down.  Chad went and grabbed dinner from the cafeteria and brought it back to eat, our midwife Angela came in and we chatted for an hour.  She decided to check me see where we at, and it was time to push.  Chad finished up his salad; and 40 minutes later little Paisley Star got to make her appearance.  She was 7lbs 6 oz.  and22 inches long.  She had very dark eyes and very little hair.  She immediately loved to play with her tongue, from the moment she was born she was alert and looking around.  We unfortunately had troubles feeding her and worked tirelessly for 2 days.  In the middle of the night the nurse came in to help me; we couldn't wake Paisley up.  They decided to test her blood sugar, it was only 20; 50 is normal.  She was slowly slipping into a come and was headed to the NICU (newborn ICU).  They took her away from me to preform a suction procedure on her lungs and stomach.  She had too much amniotic fluid in her stomach still and had aspirated some of it.  After that we consented to give her formula to get her sugars up and avoid the NICU.  The gave her 40 CC's of formula and her blood sugar came up to 75.  And she finally woke up and was alert again.  That was the scariest moment for us.  I didn't sleep all night.  I felt terrible that I couldn't be there with her in the procedure.  It would have probably been much harder watching them suction her, though.  From then on they checked her blood sugars every couple hours.  Her poor little heals were covered in prick marks.  She didn't cry once, she's a tough little cookie.  And then we finally got to go home.
